Brushes vs Fingers

In Aprils issue of Vogue I found this great little debate
'Brushes vs Fingers'

I thought it was quite interesting - Vogue asked 10 top Make up Artists for their thoughts on using brushes and their fingers for application.

I personally feel there are certain products that work very well with fingers and others that work very well with brushes, so for me it's always a mix.
I couldn't go to work without my brushes but I also spend time applying, blending and layering with my fingers!

It's worth trying a product with a brush and then with fingers to experiment and discover the different finishes, the variety of outcomes.

Don't limit yourself to brushes only or fingers only, have fun, play around with the products x

'HOW TO' For Big Textured Curly Hair..

 Photographer - Rahel Weiss
Stylist - Lauren Dietze
Hair and Make up - Me

We recently shot this gorgeous hair story, I'm gonna give you a run down on how to create the look yourself!

Our model, Rebecka has a lot of hair but it's quite fine which means it holds shape really well, depending on your hair texture (or your models hair texture) you'll want to prep the hair first with products designed for your hair type.

Prepping the hair means you'll get better results that last much longer.

1. I like to dampen the hair down with a little water and continue with either Bumble and Bumble Tonic (dry, coarse, coloured hair) or Bumble and Bumble Prep (fine, limp, healthy hair)
I spray this through in layers, to ensure even application.

Both these replace moisture, de-tangle and enhance the performance of other products.

 OR

2. Either add Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray (for fine hair) or Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme (for when you need a little bit more control) These will work like an old-school mousse, they add body, lift, curl definition and hold.

OR

3. Blow dry the hair in sections, starting at the nape of the neck, using a large round brush, lift the hair straight up from the root to achieve maximum lift.

4. Again starting at the nape of the neck, take inch sections and wrap them around a... barrel tong. Spray a little Bumble and Bumble Does It All Styling Spray to each section first, pin once tonged.
For this look you want to achieve a large bulk in the longer lengths so to pad this area out, keep your tongs horizontal and keep the hair going straight up once you get to the root.

5. Once you're half way up the head, start tonging with your barrel vertical, do one row around the head with the curl facing one way and do the next layer with the curl facing the other way - this will give us nice variation of curls and direction to achieve a natural bigness.

6. For the top of the head, take slightly bigger sections and curl all the hair back away from the face, your tongs will be horizontal for the very top of the head.

7. Spray a little Bumble and Bumble Classic Hair Spray all over the head and let cool completely.

8. Unpin all the curls, starting at the nape of the neck, gently comb through with a wide toothed comb.
You may like to add a little Bumble and Bumble Defrizz (for control, to get those flyaways) or a little Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine for course, dry hair to separate and smooth) I used Brilliantine on Rebecka, I worked it into my hands and squeezed it into her hair from the mid to ends.

OR

9. I added definition to picked out pieces and ends with Bumble and Bumble Sumowax, this just adds to the texture and keeps every strand different. This is the time to really play with the hair, shape it, mould it, pull pieces out, rub the roots, backcomb the ends in large sections with a soft bristle brush, any tweaking you want to do.

10. One last light mist of Bumble and Bumble Classic Hair Spray for flexible hold and subtle sheen. Lift the hair and spray into the curl, you never want to spray hair stiff.

That gives you big textured curly, beachy, beautiful hair, give it a go and let me know how you get on.
Hope that's helpful, send me through any questions x

Obviously you can use other products and other brands to create this look, but this is what I used on our model on the day, and it's what I have in my kit and use regularly.

You can read more about Bumble and Bumble hair products, styles, and how tos on their website
And all products can be purchased online or at Liberty, Space NK, Selfridges and Salons.

New Favourite Red Lips!

I love love love the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils by NARS.
This one is shade Cruella - which is a scarlet red, works great on every skin tone.
It's the darker swatch on my hand in the below image, the other red is MAC Ruby Woo - just for comparison.

(image taken from nars.com)

Basically it's a lipstick in a pencil form, so it's a chubby pencil, not standard pencil size, it contains 2.4g of product (a little less than a NARS lipstick, 3.4g) and is so easy to apply.
It makes wearing a red lip much more accessible, it's your liner and bullet in one.

I love that they are all matte, long lasting and non drying and that they come in a great selection of 17 gorgeous shades.

They also won - "Best Long-Wearing Lipstick" 2011 Allure "Best of Beauty"

Well done NARS

We love a matte lip, especially on the go!

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils £17.50 from Selfridges, Liberty, Space NK or online

Again, Fringe?

I recently mentioned the come back of the fringe, I decided that personally it wasn't for me although I do love the super short styles.

Now this little beauty is in the current issue of Grazia magazine, yes people, that's a 'cut out and try on' fringe!
Brilliant!

I'm now contemplating the fringe

I'm thinking of holidays...

When I go away I love to have great skincare products with me, especially if the climate is different. It's the perfect time for treats like masks, boosters and serums. I usually decant my standard sized products into lots of mini travel pots to save on space and weight.

Recently, I discovered this!

Full of advanced skin care ingredients like marine collagen, red algae extract, papaya, soy bean extract etc they give really great results.

Inside are 10 little 2ml airtight bottles, ready to use all lined up in order -
Purifying Cleanser
Toning Lotion
Clay Mask
Treatment Serum
Hydrating Mask
Hydrating Booster
Lip Exfoliator
Lip Moisturiser
Eye Treatment
Moisture Seal Cream

It contains a booklet to inform you of all ingredients and benefits along with an application guide.

The Spa Facial formula's do not contain artificial perfumes or colourants and they are
all scented with natural essential oils of jojoba olive avocado and sweet almond.

I absolutely love it, it's a whole facial in a packet that fits perfectly in your toiletry bag, great fun.
Of course you can purchase every single one as a full size bottle but these little fellas cost about £12 and are perfect for travel!

Fringe?

So the fringe is on it's way back in for Autumn, I'm not going to be donning the fringe due to the tedious growing that's been happening with my hair for the 3 years or so.
However, people get your fringe on!

I thought this was a handy little bit of information so I'm sharing it!

Thanks to TIGI's Bed Head Street Squad Hairstylist - Sami Knight you can all very easily have a fringe in no time.

I'm a fan of the slightly alien-esque super short fringe, as seen here from the Versace A/W12 show and the Elie Saab A/W12 show, but theres a fringe for everyone, take your pick.
